"A Letter of Great Importance" by Adam Smith Part 0 - The Basics The Cottage is a room. A dusty jacket is here. The Street is a room. The Baron's Villa is a room. A man called the Baron is here. The baron carries the heavy key. The street is north of the cottage. The heavy door is west of the villa and east of the street. The heavy door is a closed locked door. The matching key of the heavy door is the heavy key. The player is in the cottage. The player is carrying a letter. Part 1 - The Mechanics The maximum score is 5000. Wetness is a kind of value. The wetnesses are dry and wet. The letter has a wetness. Every turn when in the street: if the letter is not in a container, now the letter is wet. The jacket is a wearable thing. The left pocket, the right pocket, the upper pocket and the not-really-secret pocket are open openable containers that are part of the jacket. Knocking is an action applying to one visible thing. Understand "knock on [something]" as knocking. Understand "knock [something]" as knocking. Before knocking the heavy door: try the baron unlocking the heavy door with the heavy key; try the baron opening the heavy door; say "The baron, had been anticipating your arrival. His dark, tired eyes look at you expectantly as he cinches up his coat. The wet weather seems to have put him in a foul mood."; stop the action. After knocking something: say "Knock knock.". Instead of giving the letter to the baron: say "The Baron snaps the letter from you!"; now the baron is carrying the letter; if the letter is dry begin; say "'Hmm' he says, stroking is beard, 'I accept.'"; end the game in victory; otherwise; say "The soggy letter begins to fall to pieces as he unfolds it. He is silent for a moment.[paragraph break]He runs you through with his rapier. You fall to the ground and warm blood begins to mingle with the puddle of chilly mud around your boots."; end the game in death; end if. Instead of telling the baron about something: say "The makes no verbal response. He searches your person with his eyes.". Instead of taking the jacket when the score is 0: award 1000 points; say "Your fingers wipe dark lines in the dust. You decide against further physical contact with such a thing." Instead of taking the jacket when the score is 1000: award 1000 points; say "Despite your misgivings, you press on. The arms immediately become tangled. The jacket flops onto the floor as you try to pop things back into shape." Instead of wearing the jacket when the score is 2000: award 1000 points; say "This whole 'wearing the jacket' affair seems like too much work. You settle for simply holding the jacket." Instead of wearing the jacket when the score is 3000: award 1000 points; say "Before taking the slighest action toward such a goal, you stop. You are quickly developing an unhealthy relationship to this jacket." After of wearing the jacket when the score is 4000: award 1000 points; say "Finally, you complete your dressing maneuver. The cloud of dust you created in the attempt begins to settle." Instead of going from the cottage when the score is 0: say "Your mother always told you to take on your jacket before going out in the cold. But . . . there is more important business at hand." The heavy door is scenery. The jacket is pushable between rooms. Part 2 - The Fancy Textual Bits The description of the cottage is "This is your home, a rather dull, undecorated cottage. The walls and floor are scattered with junk from one point another in your life, but having seen them every day, you have become blind to them. The only things on your mind now are delivering the letter in your hand to the baron. Through a sagging glass window you can see thick sheets of rain falling onto an ever-thickening layer of mud you used to call the street. The main door of your cottage leads north to the street, just a short hop west from the Baron's villa." The description of the street is "You feet slowly sink deeper and deeper into the mud. To the east is the Baron's villa, guarded by an encircling wall broken by a single, heavy door." The description of the villa is "There are probably heaps of interesting treasures here, but none of that concerns you now. The Baron's gaze retains a solid grip on you." The description of the Baron is "Nothing is more apparent than his demanding stare." The description of the player is "Someone who doesn't have time for such nonsense." The description of the jacket is "A dusty, multi-pocketed jacket. You haven't worn it in years, but the weather today certainly warrants putting on some extra layers.". The description of the letter is "[if dry]You know full well the importance of this letter as well as the importance of delivering it as soon as possible.[otherwise]Wet, soggy, ink everywhere. The letter is RUINED.[end if]" The description of the heavy door is "Swollen in the rain, it does look quite imposing. However, you are not afraid." Part 3 - Testing Test wet with "n / wear jacket / n / knock door / x letter / e / tell baron about letter / give letter to baron". Test dry with "wear jacket / g / g / g / g / put letter in left pocket / n / knock door / e /give letter to baron". Test lazy with "wear jacket / put letter in upper pocket / push jacket north / knock door / push jacket east / give letter to baron".
